"When the Volcano Stirs..."

Carnegie Capital Science Evening Lecture - May 31, 2017

Volcanic eruptions pose an increasing threat to human lives and infrastructure in today's rapidly globalizing world, leading to a need for more-sensitive and accurate tools for detecting and interpreting signs of volcanic unrest. Fortunately, most volcanoes give subtle indications of their future eruptive potential that can be detected using state-of-the-art seismic instrumentation. Dr. Roman explores the recent development of several new paradigms for eruption forecasting and their implications for our understanding of how volcanoes work.

"The Secret Life of Quiescent Volcanoes"

Carnegie Neighborhood Lecture Series - May 28, 2014

Eruptions, while dangerous and captivating, represent only a small fraction of the magmatic activity that occurs on Earth. The spread of geophysical monitoring networks on potentially active volcanoes in recent decades has highlighted a wide spectrum of magmatic unrest beneath apparently 'quiescent' volcanoes. Dr. Roman explore sdifferent types of non-eruptive volcanic unrest through a survey of case studies and considers the implications for eruption forecasting and for our overall understanding of volcanic processes.

"How Volcano Monitoring Has Evolved"

Smithsonian Institution Mt. St. Helens 40th Anniversary Series - May 18, 2020

Technology advancements in volcano monitoring techniques have been immense over the past 40 years, since the Mount St. Helens 1980 eruption. Volcanologist Diana Roman takes us through some of the big advancements in seismology, geophysics, and petrology, that help us monitor volcanoes in real time, from our kitchen tables.

BBC Science Hour - December 15, 2019

From the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, Roland Pease talks with Diana Roman of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington DC about the tragic White Island volcanic eruption in which at least eight tourists died.
